The Hospital is located in the heart of West Delhi at a distance of 100 metres from Hari Nagar Ghanta Ghar. It can be approached via Najaf Garh Road through Subhash Nagar or Tilak Nagar or from South Delhi via Jail Road or via Ring Road through Maya Puri. INTRODUCTION

Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital was started in 1970 as a 50 Bedded hospital which was extended upto 500 Beds in 1987. Casualty started in 1987 for day time only and with effect from April, 1998 it became functional round the clock. This hospital is providing specialized services to millions of people of West Delhi and imparting training to Post graduate and under graduate medical students and para-medicals.

1. Disposal of biomedical waste

The hospital follows the norms laid down by the Delhi Pollution Committee regarding management of Bio Medical Waste. The hospital is equipped with latest state of art technology for Bio Medical Waste Management like incinerator and Autoclave and shredder.

Hospital Waste Management

DDU Hospital has a bed strength of 500 which is likely to be increased to approximately to 650 in the next year or with the establishment of new Emergency Block.

Presently around 500 kilo of medical waste is being generated in this hospital per day which is being managed as per guidelines laid by D.P.C.C. through India Waste energy Development Ltd. This hospital has also been instructed to treat the Bio medical waste from five nearby Govt. Hospital.

Hospital waste sterilizer (capacity 1700 litres) & Shredder have also been installed in DDU hospital for total management of hospital waste.

Training for doctors and staff on segregation and disposal of waste has been done. Adequate number of bio-degradeable bags with specified coloured coding for different types of wastes, are always available in all the departments.

3. Blood Banks

D.D.U. Hospital has been made Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (West Zone) since September, 1994 which is catering to the needs of this hospital as well as other hospitals/private nursing homes of this area for their blood requirement. The Blood Bank deals with whole blood and its components like packed cell, platelet, platelet rich plasma, fresh frozen plasma. The source of Blood Bank is through replacement donation, voluntary donation by individual. The voluntary Blood Donation Camps are organised by various NGOs. For Govt. hospital, no money is charged, for private hospitals & Nursing homes an amount of Rs. 500/- is charged as processing fee for each unit of blood or its components . The RBTC functions 24 X 7. The Blood Bank is also taking care of blood transfusion needs of 125 Thalassemic patients who are registered with us.

4. Ayurvedic Unit

OPD facilities have been made available since July, 1995.

5. Mortuary Services

The autopsy service was started in the year 1996 and was conducting autopsies till 26.01.2000.The autopsy service was confined to the person dying in DDU Hospital and the cases brought dead to the hospital. However, after the GNCT Delhi order dated 27.04.2000, the hospital is performing autopsies of 13 police station of South West District also. Embalming facility is not available.

6. School of Nursing

School of Nursing came into being in October 93. 25 students are admitted for three-year course.

7. Voluntary Social Service Centre

A Social service centre with 10 social workers is presently functioning at D.D.U.Hospital to guide and help the needy patients.

8. I.C.U.

ICU unit with 6 beds is fully equipped and functional under Anaesthesia Department .

9. I.C.C.U.

A 10 bedded fully equipped ICCU is functioning in the the Department of Medicine.

10. DNB Courses and Intership

D.D.U. Hospital has been accredited for DNB course in Fam. Med Gyanc. Surgery, Medicine, Orth., Paed., Eye, ENT, Radiology, Anaesthesia Departments. No of seat is 33 (primary-18, Secondry- 15 each year.)

The present sanctioned strength of the Hospital is 1628 (Group A-346, Group B-32, Group C-720 and Group D-530)

12. Centralised Medical Gas Supply

There is Centralized Medical Gases and suction System for all O.T.S. and I.C.U., ICCU, Labour Room, Casualty and Emergency, all wards along with the installation of Oxygen Concentrator System.

13. Computerisation of Hospital services

OPD Services has already been computerized. Plans for computerization of other parts of the Hospital are being prepared as part of Hospital Information Management System (HIMS).

15. An Art Centre has recently been started during October, 2005 for providing treatment and counseling to AIDS patients.

17 Thalassemic Treatment Centre - Separate ward for transfusion to Thalassemic patients is there along with all facilities.

18 DOTS - Under National Tuberculosis Control Program, a DOTS Centre is there in the hospital along with a chest clinic. Free diagnostic facilities and treatment are provided to patients of the TB and other Chest Diseases .

19 Leprosy Control Programme - Leprosy Control Programme is being implemented. Diagnosis and treatment is provided to all suspected and proved Leprosy patients.

In case, the treatment is not available in this Hospital, the patients are referred to other hospital, after giving available treatment in the Hospital, for further management, in the Hospital ambulances with the services of one accompanying Doctor, in such type of cases.
